Wellesley College Rises Up To Go Green
Two years ago, Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts was in a terrible state in terms of sustainability on campus. However, in just one year’s time, the school has pulled out all the stops in an effort to go green.
Before the transition, H. Kim Bottomly, President of Wellesley College, stated, "It is no longer possible for any reasonable person to doubt that we have a serious problem.” Since then, Bottomly has been calling for the cooperation of faculty, students, and staff to ensure that sustainability remains their joint primary focus.
To further the efforts and encourage student involvement in the initiative, Wellesley has set up a website devoted to sustainability. The site offers students a venue to give feedback and ask questions on how they can go green.
An example of projects was when the Tanner Conference of Wellesley College, a full-day event for students and alumnae to reflect critically upon, analyze and share their off-campus experiences, teamed up with the Sustainability Advisory Committee to ensure the reduction of the Conference's impact on the environment.
Today, Wellesley College holds a B- on the Endowment Institute’s College Sustainability Report Card. After coming from near-critical condition, the campus is continuing to show improvement compared to prior years.
